Choosing an Amsterdam hotel with the evening already in mind

Most guests choose the hotel first and think about the evening later. Reversing the order, even partly, avoids the small frictions that tend to appear at the door: a lift that will not move without a card, a room too narrow for two, a district outside the city.

Nothing about an outcall requires a particular kind of hotel. Large chain hotels, small canal-house hotels, design hotels and apartment-hotels all work. What changes from one to the next is how easily a visitor reaches your door at the hour you booked, and how comfortable the room is once she is inside. Both can be judged from the listing, before you pay for anything.

Where in the city

Every central district is reached in the same forty to sixty minutes from her setting out: the Centrum, the Jordaan, Oud-Zuid, De Pijp, Zuidas and the streets around Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, Dam Square and the Vondelpark. A hotel at Schiphol is arranged on its own, with the journey time agreed before anything is fixed. A cheaper room in a town beyond Amsterdam is the one choice that rules the evening out, since nothing past the city and the airport is reached.

How the building treats visitors

Read the house rules on the listing. Some hotels ask every visitor to show identification at the desk after a certain hour, some have a single street door that locks at night, and most newer buildings run their lifts on key cards. None of this is a problem once you know it, and each point becomes a sentence in the message you send after check-in. A hotel that bars visitors from rooms altogether is unusual in Amsterdam, but if a listing says so, believe it and pick another.

The room itself

Book a double rather than a twin, and check the floor area. Older buildings in the canal belt bring character, and sometimes very compact rooms and steep stairs with no lift. If soapy or nuru is on your mind, the bathroom matters as much as the bedroom, and the photos usually show whether there is a bath or a walk-in shower. The page on planning around the room takes space, warmth and water one at a time.

A room for one booking

If you are travelling with friends, take a room of your own for at least the night of the visit. A shared room does not work for her unless every adult in it is part of the booking and named in the thread. Reserving the room under your own name keeps things simple, since the name in the thread and the name at the desk then match.

Once the hotel is chosen, the remaining steps are short, and they are listed in order in what to confirm before the trip.

Asked often

Questions

Is one hotel area quicker to reach than another?

Not in any way that changes the booking. The arrival window is the same forty to sixty minutes across the central districts, so choose the area for the rest of your trip and keep it inside Amsterdam.

Do I need to tell the hotel I am expecting a visitor?

Only if the hotel rules ask for it, for instance a desk that signs visitors in after a certain hour. The house itself tells the hotel nothing.

What about an apartment-hotel with a self-service entrance?

That works well, as long as you pass on how the entrance opens. Put the door code or the building instructions in the thread on the day itself rather than weeks ahead, in case they change.
